Spontaneous preterm birth is one of the major determinants of perinatal and infant mortality. Understanding the mechanisms that trigger it is of vital importance to more efficiently implement the measures that lead to its prevention. The main objective of this review is to mention general aspects that are transcendental to understand the impact of prematurity today and explain the basis behind its pathophysiology for a better implementation of the interventions available today to prevent its evolution
