This study utilizes regression discontinuity to examine the long-run impacts of the mita, an extensive forced mining labor system in effect in Peru and Bolivia between 1573 and 1812. Results indicate that a mita effect lowers household consumption by around 25% and increases the prevalence of stunted growth in children by around 6 percentage points in subjected districts today. Using data from the Spanish Empire and Peruvian Republic to trace channels of institutional persistence, I show that the mita’s influence has persisted through its impacts on land tenure and public goods provision. Mita districts historically had fewer large landowners and lower educational attainment. Today, they are less integrated into road networks and their residents are substantially more likely to be subsistence farmers. |

Los resultados indican que uno de los efectos de la mita es que, en los actuales distritos donde tuvo vigencia, el consumo doméstico se ha visto reducido en cerca del 25%, mientras que la prevalencia del retraso del crecimiento en niños se ha incrementado en alrededor de seis puntos porcentuales. Utilizando los datos del imperio español y de la República del Perú para rastrear los canales de la persistencia institucional, muestro que la influencia de la mita ha persistido a través de sus impactos sobre la tenencia de la tierra y el aprovisionamiento de bienes públicos. Los distritos que estuvieron sujetos a la mita han tenido históricamente un menor número de grandes terratenientes y baja escolaridad, hoy en día están menos integrados a la red de carreteras y sus pobladores son mucho más propensos a ser agricultores de subsistencia.application/pdfspaUniversidad del Pacífico.
