Sumario:The purpose of this descriptive-comparative investigation was to prove whether there are differences in the levels of emotional intelligence among the students of a police educational institution and a public educational institution. The intentional nonprobabilistic sample was composed of 140 sixth graders, both sexes and aged 10-12 years. The instrument applied was knowing my emotions test for children adapted by Ruiz and Benites (2004). The results showed that there are significant differences in the emotional intelligence coefficient, getting better scores the police educational institution. We also found significant differences in the intrapersonal, adaptability and general mood dimensions favoring the police educational institution, while there were no significant differences in the interpersonal and happiness-optimism dimensions between the two groups of students.
