Sumario: | In Peru, the Heart Failure is the fifth leading cause of death for the elderly and the tenth for the population. Research in other countries show that low hemoglobin levels are a strong predictor of mortality for these patients; however, after the review there are few studies concerning this issue in our country. Objective: To determine whether anemia is a risk factor for mortality in patients with heart failure hospitalized at the Hospital Regional Docente de Trujillo (HRDT). Methods: Cases and controls´ studies was realized. We obtained Hemoglobin levels of two groups consisting of 51 Clinical History each group of death patients and no death patients during hospitalization respectively, matching the data by age, sex and functional class NYHA were obtained. For the definition of anemia hemoglobin <12 g / dL was taken in women and <13 g / dL for men according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Results: Of 102 patients with a mean age (standard deviation) of 67.95 (12.14) years, 56 women and 46 men. 51.3% were in functional class III and 20% were in functional class IV heart failure patients at the time of hospitalization. 70.6% were anemic at the time of admission and the mean values of hemoglobin was 10.7 g / dL. In addition, 86.27% of all patients with HF, anemia and coursed died. The odds ratio OR = 5.16 with a confidence interval 1.96 - 13.62 to 95%. Conclusions: Anemia is a risk factor for mortality in patients with heart failure, showing that the risk of dying versus not perish is 5.16 (CI 95% 1.96-13.62) times higher in HF patients that present with anemia compared with those not present with anemia |
