Sumario:INTRODUCTION: Preeclampsia is a frequent multisystemic disorder that affects pregnant women and is characterized by hypertension associated with proteinuria after week 20 of gestation in a previously normotensive woman. It is considered the second cause of maternal death in rural areas of our country. The optimal weight gain during pregnancy in women with normal pre-pregnancy weight (BMI = 18.5 - 24.9 kg / m2) is 11.5 to 16 kg; Therefore, excessive weight gain is considered when they exceed the values established during pregnancy. OBJECTIVE: To determine if excessive gestational weight gain is a risk factor for preeclampsia. METHODOLOGY: It is an analytical study, cases and controls , we worked with a sample of CASES = 62 patients and CONTROLS = 124 patients, attended in the service of Gyneco - Obstetrics of the Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo, to whom the file was applied of data collection from the review of each clinical history and the review of the SIP of the Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo and was carried out during the months January 2006 - December 2015. RESULTS: evidenced of the 62 pregnant women with preeclampsia, 46.8% they presented excessive weight gain during pregnancy, while of the 124 pregnant women who did not present preeclampsia, 24.2% had excessive weight gain in pregnancy (OR: 2.75, 95% CI: 2.25, 3.36), (x2 = 9.73 p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: excessive gestational weight gain is a risk factor for developing preeclampsia. KEYWORDS: Excessive gain gestational weight and preeclampsia.
