| Sumario: | Objective: To evaluate the association between delayed surgical treatment and complicated acute appendicitis in patients treated at the Loreto Regional Hospital during 2024. Methodology: An observational, analytical, and cross-sectional study was conducted with 222 patients diagnosed with acute appendicitis, in whom clinical and surgical variables were analyzed. Results: Patients with complicated appendicitis presented longer delays in all stages of the care process. The time from symptom onset to hospital admission was significantly longer in this group, with more visits after 24 hours. Likewise, surgical waiting time and the frequency of delays ≥24 hours were higher in complicated cases. Hospital stay was also considerably longer, as was the total duration of illness, with a higher proportion of patients whose progression exceeded 48 hours. All these findings show a significant association between delayed care and the presence of complications. Conclusions: It is concluded that prehospital delay is a determining factor in the progression of appendicitis to complicated forms, while in-hospital delay did not show a significant impact, highlighting the importance of early care in health services. |
