Departamento Académico de Manejo ForestalEl estudio de la estructura y funcionamiento de dos índices de peligro meteorológico de incendios forestales: uno de uso Nacional "Índice de Peligro de Incendios Forestales (IPIF)" y el otro de uso Internacional "Índice Meterorológico de Incendios Forestales canadiense (FWI)" ha sido realizado sobre un área de estudio que abarca una superficie de 25.079,50 km2 de la zona Atlántica; 8.015,15 km2 de la zona Continental y 16.592,82 km2 de la zona Mediterránea de la España penínsular. El objetivo del estudio ha sido analizar la estructura y funcionamiento de los índices IPIF y FWI desde el punto de vista de su uso como elemento de toma de decisiones en la gestión preventiva de los incendios forestales. La metodología utilizada y desarrollada en el análisis puede ser también aplicada a la comparación de la bondad de otros índices prefijados, facilitando el avance hacia la gestión rentable y sostenible de los índices meteorológicos de incendios forestales en España. La caracterización de la estructura de los índices IPIF y FWI se llevó a cabo por medio de información primaria y secundaria recopilada respectivamente en el Área de Defensa contra Incendios Forestales de la DGCN, el Servicio Forestal de Canadá, así como mediante correspondencia con investigadores de ambos índices en Francia, Italia y Portugal.The structure, adequacy, and goodness of two forest fire weather indexes, one of them running at national scale (IPIF) and the other one internationally used (Fire Weather Index-FWI), have been carried out over a study area that includes a total of 25.079,5 Km2 in the Spanish Atlantic region, 8.015,15 Km2 in the continental part and 16.592,82 km2 in the Spanish Mediterranean region. The goal of the study was to make an analýsis of the structure and functioning of the abovementionated indexes from the point of view of their use as decision-making tool for forest fire prevention management purposes. The metodology developed and utilised in this analysis may be also applied for comparing the goodness of other predefined indexes. The results of this research activity constitutes a step forward oriented to achieve a more profitable and sustainable use of forest fire weather indexes in Spain. The characterization of the structure of both indexes was undertaken making use of the primary and secondary information collected from the Area of Forest Fire Defence of the Spanish General Directorate of Nature Conservation and from the Canadian Forestry Service.
