Departamento Académico de HorticulturaEl cultivo del espárrago (Asparagus officinalis L.) representa una parte fundamental en las exportaciones no tradicionales del Perú de las últimas décadas. Una de las principales zonas de producción a nivel nacional se encuentra en La Libertad, en específico en el área de influencia del Proyecto Especial Chavimochic (PECH), con 4003 hectáreas nuevas sembradas al 2018; más del 94 % con espárrago blanco. Las características propias del cultivo en la irrigación destacan por: 1) la siembra mediante almácigo; 2) su desarrollo en suelo arenoso; 3) la posibilidad de producir dos campañas agrícolas al año; 4) la intensidad en el manejo tecnificado, con especial énfasis en el manejo del recurso hídrico y el manejo integrado de plagas y enfermedades; 5) las actividades críticas como el agoste, el chapodo, el aporque y el desaporque; y 6) la demandante labor manual de cosecha. Dichas actividades han sido perfeccionadas durante años por ensayo y error por los ingenieros agrónomos y técnicos de las compañías agrícolas de la Irrigación Chavimochic. Desde el año 2015, las nuevas áreas de espárrago en el ámbito del PECH han decrecido considerablemente. Entre las razones para este declive, se pueden enumerar la producción del espárrago más allá de su vida útil ideal, la competencia por áreas nuevas con otros cultivos más rentables, oportunidades de mejora en el manejo del cultivo – sobre todo, en el manejo sanitario y de riego–, y los nuevos competidores a nivel internacional. Además, los productores deben afrontar nuevos retos a futuro como el aumento del costo de la mano de obra y el cambio climático, entre otros. Entre las alternativas para mejorar la productividad están, por ejemplo, la innovación en la maquinaria, el manejo sostenible del riego y suelo, el uso de nuevos cultivares, el manejo de la densidad de plantación y los corredores biológicosThe asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) has been one of the main products of the nontraditional exportation of Peru in the last decades. La Libertad is an important production region, mainly in the zone of influence of the Proyecto Especial Chavimochic (PECH) – 4003 hectares planted only in 2018, 94 percent of white asparagus. The special features of the production of asparagus in the PECH are: 1) The planting by seedlings, 2) Production in sandy soils, 3) The availability of two production campaigns per year, 4) The technification of the production, in the irrigation and pest management, especially, 5) The crucial activities, like irrigation reduction and stop, bush pruning, hilling and de-hilling, and 6) high-demand manual harvesting. These activities have been improving for years by the agronomist and technicians at the croplands of Chavimochic irrigation. Since 2015, the new planted areas of asparagus in the PECH zone have been decreasing. Some reasons are the overproduction of croplands beyond their commercial lifespan, the demand for new croplands for other more profitable crops, the need improvement of production process – in pest management and fertirrigation mainly, and new producer countries. Moreover, the companies need to face new challenges, like the increasing manpower cost and the climate change.
