Descripción
Sumario:The project consists of the recovery of the Santa Catalina barracks for the creation of a multidisciplinary cultural center for the creation and promotion of contemporary art. The barracks are currently configured as an urban void due to the lack of use of the property, which causes the deterioration of its structure due to lack of maintenance. The recovery is based on the principles of critical-conservative approach on restoration, which proposes the use of this type of building for social purposes, respecting the shape of the original building, but adapting it with a view to the future and not for the purpose of preserving the monument intact. The proposal of the new program responds to the deficiencies that exist around the promotion of contemporary art and cultural education in Perú. To this we add the dissatisfaction of the people of Lima with respect to cultural activities and the limited access that the majority of the population has to these. For this reason, it is understood that the importance of creating a cultural center, in addition to being in charge of the art exhibition, works for the creation of new pieces, training and identification of talents and their connection with the world. This program consists of four complementary parts: the cultural center, the utilitarian art shopping center, the educational program and the residence for artists. These uses determine at the architectural level certain requirements that have been covered for their full operation, for which theories and criteria have been explored such as those of adaptability in architecture, the different relationships of void to understand how to create from this concept and the different relationships that a restoration project of this type can have. Likewise, examples of international cultural centers were considered to understand the operation and the needs that these have spatially. Finally, the study of the area and the existing dynamics play an important role in the decisions made at the project level. The Multidisciplinary Center for Artistic Creation results in a different model of cultural center which can be replicated and adapted in different restoration projects. In addition, it generates a public facility in the area that helps to bring cultural dynamics closer to users who arrive to downtown Lima. Finally, it complies with recovering this monumental property and revalues the important elements through strategies based on the study of the barracks itself and the environment that surrounds it.
