Lo andino has been a rallying point for the explicitly articulated view that much about the Andean environment and the cultures and forms of social organization that developed there were utterly unlike anything else in the world, and that comparative study is therefore misguided. There certainly are Andeanist archaeologists with well-developed comparative perspectives, however. This is particularly evident in the study of the Inka empire, which has been viewed from a comparative perspective in several rather different ways.Como los editores de esta obra observan en su introducción, la arqueología andina ha tenido una larga y bien desarrollada tendencia anticomparativa. "Lo andino" ha sido un punto de motivación para la visión explícitamente articulada de que el medio ambiente andino y las culturas y formas de organización social que ahí se desarrollaron fueron completamente distintas a las de cualquier otra en el planeta, y por ende, que los enfoques comparativos están errados.
