He knows that he is mortal, that his life will have an end, he also knows that it had a beginning which links this initial moment to the present moment. This continuity presents itself to his consciousness in the form of a narrative, rewritten throughout his existence. Human communities do not have a clear image of their birth and even less a prefiguration of their death, yet they act in a manner analogous to that of individuals, except that they are content to transmit narratives concerning the common past, shared by an important part of the population. This awareness of the past is what we call, in a very general sense, individual or collective memory. This text deals with these themes and evokes the cases of political violence in Cambodia and Peru.El ser humano se distingue de las otras especies animales por la conciencia que tiene de estar inscrito en el curso del tiempo. Él sabe que es mortal, que su vida tendrá un fin, y él sabe también que ella tuvo un comienzo que liga ese momento inicial al momento presente. Esta continuidad se presenta en su conciencia bajo la forma de una narración, reescrita a lo largo de toda su existencia. Las comunidades humanas no tienen una imagen clara de su nacimiento y menos aún una prefiguración de su muerte; sin embargo, actúan de manera análoga a la de los individuos, salvo que se contentan con transmitir las narraciones concernientes al pasado común, compartidas por una parte importante de la población. Esta conciencia del tiempo pasado es lo que llamamos, en un sentido muy general, la memoria, individual o colectiva.
