description Objectives: To determine the relationship between procrastination and academic stress in Dentistry students. The variables were evaluated using the SISCO Inventory of academic stress and the Academic Procrastination Scale – EPA. The relationship between the variables was determined using Spearman’s correlation. Results: 95.1% of the students indicated they had academic stress. Students who presented higher levels of academic self-regulation used strategies to cope with stress (p=0.028). It was determined that students who have a higher incidents of academic procrastination with also tend to report psychological reactions associated with stress (p=0.033). Likewise, it was identified that students who had strategies to cope with stress (p=0.004) were the least likely to postpone academic work. Conclusions: 95.1% of the students described having experienced episodes of anguish, worry, anxiety or nervousness during the academic semester. The students who presented higher levels of academic self-regulation were those who had skills to cope with stress. Likewise, it is determined that students who apply stress coping strategies are those who present the habit of academic procrastination less frequently.

Materiales y Métodos: Estudio de tipo observacional, descriptivo, transversal y correlacional en 61 estudiantes del IV semestre de la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad de San Martín de Porres, Lima, Perú. Las variables fueron evaluadas mediante el Inventario SISCO de estrés académico y la Escala de Procrastinación Académica – EPA. La relación entre las variables se determinó mediante la correlación de Spearman. Resultados: El 95,1% de los estudiantes indicaron tener estrés académico. Los alumnos que presentaron mayores niveles de autorregulación académica utilizaron las estrategias para enfrentar al estrés (p=0,028). Se determinó que los alumnos que tienen el hábito de postergación académica con mayor incidencia, tienden también a reportar reacciones psicológicas asociadas al estrés (p=0,033). Asimismo, se identificó que los estudiantes que contaron con estrategias para afrontar el estrés (p=0,004) fueron lo que menos postergaron las labores académicas. Conclusiones: El 95,1% de estudiantes describieron haber presentado episodios de angustia, preocupación, ansiedad o nerviosismo en el tiempo que cursaron el semestre académico. Los alumnos que presentaron mayores niveles de autorregulación académica fueron los que contaron con habilidades para hacer frente al estrés.
