The relationship between this order and the process of vaccination against smallpox in Peru at the beginning of the 19th century will be studied. It will also review how vaccination protects the human body from different diseases and the impact it has had on world health, as the technique of immunization revolutionized contemporary medicine. It will also examine the types of vaccines and the relevance of immunizations concerning the current situation of COVID-19.En el presente artículo se analizará la tradición «Los barbones», texto que forma parte de las Tradiciones peruanas de don Ricardo Palma, y en la que se menciona a la orden hospitalaria de los bethlemitas. Se estudiará la relación que tuvo esta orden con el proceso de vacunación contra la viruela en Perú a inicios del siglo XIX. Asimismo, se hará una revisión de la forma en que la vacuna protege al cuerpo humano de las distintas enfermedades y el impacto sanitario que ha significado para la salud mundial, pues la técnica de inmunización revolucionó la medicina contemporánea.
