This will be done based on the analysis of the story «¡A nadar, peces!», by the renowned writer Ricardo Palma, a text that describes the character Father Carapulcra, in whom the prevalence of smallpox in the Viceroyalty is described. Finally, the relationship between smallpoxand its treatment and the current situation of COVID-19 will be analyzed.En este artículo se revisarán los indicios y efectos de la propagación de la viruela en la época colonial del Perú, cuya principal causante fue la llegada de los españoles al Nuevo Mundo en el siglo XVI. Esto se realizará a partir del análisis de la tradición «¡A nadar, peces!», del distinguido escritor Ricardo Palma, texto en el que se describe al personaje padre Carapulcra, en quien se puede ver la prevalencia que tuvo la viruela en el Virreinato.
