Th us, the application of lichens as bioindicators of atmospheric pollutants has emerged as a complementary option. Th e application of the Atmospheric Purity Index (IPA) protocol is the most widely used; however, there are currently more than twenty types of IPA which have been modifi ed from the original formula. In this context, the present study aims to analyze the theoretical aspects related to the application of the IPA methodology in diff erent contexts, to recommend the most widely used formula, easy application and standardization. As a result, it was defi ned that the protocol used by Crespo is the one with the highest frequency of application among the studies related to the use of lichens as bioindicators.Los resultados obtenidos en los es tudios de impacto ambiental muchas veces no presentan una base de datos de calidad y confi abilidad. Los altos costos de instalación de equipos instrumentales de monitoreo y la amplitud geográfi ca de las zonas de estudio no han permitido realizar una correcta evaluación ambiental. Es así, que la aplicación de líquenes como bioindicadores de contaminantes atmosféricos ha surgido como una opción complementaria. La aplicación del protocolo del Índice de Pureza Atmosférica (IPA) es la de mayor uso; sin embargo, actualmente existen más de veinte tipos de IPA las cuales se han modificado de la fórmula original. En este contexto el presente estudio tiene como objetivo analizar los aspectos teóricos relacionados a la aplicación de la metodología IPA en diferentes contextos, para recomendar la fórmula de mayor utilización, fácil aplicación y estandarización.
