This narrative image will then be complemented with data from historical sources, which explain the clinical issue and the eradication with the use of vaccines. Some considerations about monkeypox and the growth of cases in Peru today will also be presented. The aim is to raise public awareness and achieve effective prevention of this disease. En este artículo se explicará cómo se manifiesta la patología de la viruela; para ello se tomará como referencia una de las primeras noticias sobre ella en la sociedad peruana: la tradición «La monja de la llave». Luego, se complementará esta imagen narrativa con datos que provienen de fuentes históricas, las mismas que explican la cuestión clínica y la erradicación con el empleo de las vacunas. Así también, se presentarán algunas consideraciones sobre la viruela del mono y el crecimiento de casos en el Perú actual. A partir de lo expuesto, se buscará concientizar a la población y lograr una prevención eficaz de esta enfermedad.
