During the last 20 years, Latin American people have been ageing. This scenario presents several dilemmas for governments. Peru has faced this situation for about 10 years. The latest statistical figures have shown this demographic trend. This situation stablishes some challenges for the Peruvian government. Therefore, the situation of the elderly, the existing social policies and the social service programs will be analyzed. Methodologically, the research presents a theoretical discussion, a bibliographic review, and a systematization of various experiences.El presente artículo aborda el proceso de envejecimiento de la población en el Perú y en América Latina, en el contexto de la pandemia. Aproximadamente, desde hace unos 20 años, las sociedades latinoamericanas se encuentran pasando por un proceso de envejecimiento de su población. Este panorama plantea una serie de encrucijadas para los Estados. En el Perú este panorama se viene avizorando desde hace unos 10 años, las últimas cifras estadísticas han evidenciado esta tendencia demográfica. Dicha situación plantea una serie de cuestiones, retos y desafíos para el Estado Peruano, por ello, se analizarán la situación en la que se encuentra el adulto mayor, las políticas sociales existentes y los programas de servicios sociales.
