There are problems regarding disagreements between professional training and health care services and population needs. Additionally, we found an asimetrical physician distribution, who were concentrated on biggest urban medical centers and hospitals. Overspecialized physicians and different problems to start working on rural areas have been observed. There is a need to set up a better link between academia and working on health through progresive education and open learning.El Ministerio de Salud se encuentra en pleno proceso de reforma sectorial que contribuye al cierre de las brechas en salud, al acceso equitativo y universal a los servicios de salud eficientes y de calidad. Bajo este marco, el desarrollo del potencial humano tiene dos dimensiones importantes: la poblacional y la del trabajador de salud. La segunda es dependiente de la primera. La problemática existente muestra discordancias entre la formación de los profesionales de salud, y las necesidades de los servicios de salud y sus respectivas poblaciones. Igualmente, persisten desigualdades en la distribución de los profesionales médicos por la concentración en grandes centros urbanos y hospitales, fundamentalmente. Existe además una mayor proporción de médicos altamente especializados.
