It is a hemiepiphyte that develops into a free-standing tree, notable for its exceptionally long terminal stipule. It also bears minute (10x) brown hairs on the branchlets, petioles, blades beneath, and in the dorsum side of the receptacle bracts–always interspersed with minute whitish hairs. The species is currently known only from the Huabal District, where it inhabits a mature montane cloud forest.Se describe una nueva especie de Ficus L. (Moraceae) del bosque montano nublado (BMN) del departamento de Cajamarca en el norte del Perú: Ficus huabalensis Reynel & J.L. Marcelo-Peña. Esta especie pertenece al subgénero Spherosuke Raf. (anteriormente conocido como Urostigma Gasp.), y se distingue por varios caracteres, tanto vegetativos como reproductivos. Se trata de un hemiepífito que en la adultez se hace un árbol independiente, con la estípula terminal notoriamente larga, y presencia de indumento de pelos diminutos de color marrón, en las ramitas, peciolos, y láminas foliares, sobre todo por el envés, y en el dorso de las brácteas del receptáculo del sicono; dichos pelos siempre entremezclados con pelos blanquecinos diminutos.
