In this research, it is presented the analysis of the metonymic processes that occur in the formation of the soccer phraseology, focusing on the player of this sport. The entries were extracted from the most representative Peruvian capital media forums. The phenomena involved in the construction of each metonymy are based on cognitive linguistics and pragmatics, since this second theoretical perspective motivates the explanation of the extralinguistic factors that contributed to its formation. It is concluded that the metonymies that refer to soccer players are constructed from the designation of the number of the player’s shirt by his shirt number that represents a specific function in the game; the designation of a figure representing the number of players of each team in the game; the position of the player by its function; the role of the player by the player to whom one refers and the color of the team’s shirt by the player, club or national team.
