Blood samples were taken from 11 horses before the start (T0), at the end (T1) and one hour after the end of the race (T2). Blood values of variables determining the acid-base state, muscle enzymes, electrolytes, metabolites, hematocrit and plasma proteins were determined. Acid-base disorders were determined using the Henderson-Hasselbach and Stewart approximations and the change in plasma volume was calculated. Differences were found in the variables of CO2 pressure, non-volatile buffer anions, HCO3-, plasma proteins, muscle enzymes, metabolites, sodium, chloride, potassium, ionized calcium and phosphates. Hyperlactatemic acidosis, respiratory alkalosis, strong ion alkalosis and non-volatile buffer anion acidosis were the acid-base disorders presented. The results were not different from those reported in studies conducted at less than 1000 meters above sea level., which allows to conclude that an altitude of 2600 m may not affect athletic performance in enduro horses.El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar el comportamiento de algunos parámetros fisiológicos y caracterizar los cambios del estado ácido-base en caballos de enduro que compitieron en una carrera de 80 km a una altitud de 2600 msnm. Se tomaron muestras de sangre a 11 caballos antes de inicio (T0), al término (T1) y una hora después de finalizar la carrera (T2). Se determinaron los valores sanguíneos de variables determinantes del estado ácido-base, enzimas musculares, electrolitos, metabolitos, hematocrito y proteínas plasmáticas. Se determinaron los desórdenes ácido-base por medio de las aproximaciones de Henderson-Hasselbach y de Stewart y se calculó el cambio en el volumen plasmático. Se encontraron diferencias en las variables presión de CO2, aniones buffer no volátiles, HCO3-, proteínas plasmáticas, enzimas musculares, metabolitos, sodio, cloruro, potasio, calcio ionizado y fosfatos. Acidosis hiperlactatémica, alcalosis respiratoria, alcalosis de iones fuertes y acidosis de aniones buffer no volátiles fueron los desórdenes ácido-base presentados.
