The first two stories, “Una visita infernal” and “El alma”, will be analyzed from a perspective that places them as “background”, that is, two first experiences that approach the subject in a bold and provocative way, displaying textual aesthetics. anticipated to the nineteenth-century context in the case of Gorriti and avant-garde in the case of Garmendia, with substantial elements that will be seen in a more articulated and profound way in the development of the last story: “A pact with the devil”, by the Mexican Juan José Arreola. From a comparative perspective, some outstanding elements will be seen in the transformation of both the handling of the subject and its textual strategies.Este artículo se dedica a explorar la tradición del pacto demoníaco y sus alcances culturales, desde una perspectiva literaria, en tres cuentos referentes de la narrativa fantástica sobre el tema y cuyos autores resultan fundamentales para la construcción del género en América Latina: Juana Manuela Gorriti, Julio Garmendia y Juan José Arreola. Los dos primeros cuentos, “Una visita infernal” y “El alma”, serán analizados desde una perspectiva que los coloca como “antecedentes”, es decir, dos primeras experiencias que se acercan al asunto de una manera audaz y provocadora, desplegando estéticas textuales anticipadas al contexto decimonónico en el caso de Gorriti y vanguardistas en el caso de Garmendia, con elementos sustanciales que se verán de manera más articulada y profunda en el desarrollo del último relato, “Un pacto con el diablo”, del mexicano Juan José Arreola.
