The context of the discussions during that period of time are reviewed, as well as, the systematic studies of the research developed by Gutiérrez- Noriega and his associates about the coca consumption in the andean people in Peru and the cocaine effects by experimental observations. The evidence about the coca harmful effects produced by the author is examined in the debates and political decisions about coca consumption in national and international policy.El presente estudio es una investigación histórica académica que analiza la obra del investigador Sanmarquino Carlos Gutiérrez-Noriega en el debate sobre las implicancias sanitarias del consumo de la hoja de coca en la población peruana. Se analiza el contexto de las discusiones en la época central del estudio y se sistematiza los diversos estudios realizados por Gutiérrez-Noriega y sus colaboradores acerca del hombre andino y el consumo de hojas de coca en el Perú y los efectos de la cocaína a nivel de observaciones experimentales.
