The objective of this communication was to collect some opinions on the opportunities and challenges that must be addressed from the perspective of small producers, academia and government. The need to improve native varieties of fine-flavor cocoa to be highly productive and resilient to climate change is discussed, as well as the urgency of effective knowledge transfer from academia in optimizing the conditions of fermentation, drying, and roasting processes, according to cocoa variety and considering producers' conditions. Actions to promote cocoa consumption, such as its inclusion in gastronomy, promotion of its nutraceutical properties, redefinition of fair objectives, and formation of specialized taster schools, are also suggested. Finally, it is noted that it is necessary to clarify state interventions to avoid redundant efforts, as well as to allocate a budget to fulfil the "National Plan for the Development of the Cocoa and Chocolate Production Chain by 2030".El notable aumento en el precio del cacao a nivel global ha generado interés tanto en la comunidad científica como en los diversos actores que intervienen en la cadena productiva. La presente comunicación tuvo por objetivo recoger algunas opiniones sobre los retos y mejoras que se deben abordar, desde la perspectiva del pequeño productor, academia y gobierno. Se discute la necesidad de mejorar las variedades nativas de cacao fino de aroma para que sean altamente productivas y resilientes al cambio climático, así como la urgencia de una transferencia efectiva de conocimiento por parte de la academia en la optimización de las condiciones de los procesos de fermentación, secado y tostado, según la variedad de cacao y considerando las condiciones de los productores. También se sugieren acciones para promover el consumo de cacao, como su inclusión en la gastronomía, promoción de sus propiedades nutraceúticas, redefinición de los objetivos de las ferias y formación de escuelas de catadores especializados.
