However, this architecture exists and we still have proof of it, unaltered, enduring the onslaught of modern edifications. Unfortunately, the ongoing prosperity misunderstands progress with destruction of history and culture, in the most thorough attempt to “eradicate idolatries”. For this reason and as a primary objective we have found it necessary to present an aspect of the image that characterized Chiclayo in the 19th century and its shift towards technologies and styles prevailing in the rest of the country: the facades to urban housing in the city of Chiclayo. La historia de la arquitectura doméstica en la ciudad de Chiclayo es un tema pendiente de investigación, tal vez opacada por la abundancia de información sobre nuestros antecedentes prehispánicos. Sin embargo, esta arquitectura existe y aún conservamos ejemplos de ella, inerme, ante el embate de una modernidad edilicia que malentiende progreso con destrucción de la historia y la cultura anterior, en el más cabal intento de “extirpación de idolatrías”. Por ello y como objetivo primario se ha considerado necesario presentar un aspecto de la imagen que caracterizó a Chiclayo en el siglo XIX y su cambio hacia tecnologías y estilos predominantes en el resto del país: las portadas de ingreso a las viviendas urbanas en la ciudad de Chiclayo.
