description Tourist activity in Mazatlán, Mexico involves various attractions, including the consumption of raw seafood, which leads to a greater risk of infections transmitted by microorganisms, since tourists are unaware of the dangers. The study aims to assess nutritional status and its association with gastrointestinal diseases in tourists hospitalized during the period 2014 - 2018 in Mazatlán Sinaloa. This research is retrospective with a quantitative and cross-sectional approach, based on a non-experimental, descriptive, and correlational design. The technique used was anthropometric and a validated survey of dietary practices for seafood consumption on the clinical records of 96 patients from a private hospital in Mazatlán. Biochemical parameters such as glucose, hemoglobin, cholesterol, and triglycerides were reviewed, and anthropometric parameters of weight and height with BMI calculation. Malnutrition problems include deficiency and excess disorders, as well as imbalances in caloric and nutrient intake, such as malnutrition, overweight, obesity, and chronic non-communicable diseases related to diet are characterized by being conditions associated with poor nutrition. A state of malnutrition can favor the appearance of various complications such as infections due to altered immunity, difficulty in wound healing, hypoproteinemia, alterations in intestinal motility, and musculoskeletal functionality, compared to those who have a normal nutritional status. Of the tourists who were diagnosed with gastroenteritis, 60.41% were malnourished: of which 38.54% were overweight, 19.79% were obese 2.08% were malnourished and only 39.58% of patients had a normal weight, according to the cut-off points of the World Health Organization. In conclusion, 75% of patients with gastroenteritis are international tourists and 25% are domestic tourists. In this study, it was determined that 60.2% of patients suffered from malnutrition (38.5% due to overweight; 19.7% obesity and 2% malnutrition), so this is a risk factor for the development of gastrointestinal diseases, especially in people who travel to other regions during tourist activities.

El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar el estado nutricional y su asociación con enfermedades gastrointestinales en turistas hospitalizados durante el periodo 2014 - 2018 en Mazatlán Sinaloa, México. Esta investigación es de tipo retrospectiva con enfoque cuantitativo y transversal, fundamentada en un diseño no experimental, descriptivo y correlacional. La técnica utilizada fue la antropométrica y encuesta de prácticas alimentarias validadas de consumo de mariscos sobre los expedientes clínicos de 96 pacientes de un hospital privado de Mazatlán. Se revisaron parámetros bioquímicos como glucosa, hemoglobina, colesterol y triglicéridos, así como parámetros antropométricos de peso y talla con cálculo de IMC (Índice de masa corporal).  Los problemas de malnutrición abarcan trastornos de deficiencias y excesos, así como los desequilibrios en la ingesta calórica y de nutrientes, de tal manera que la desnutrición, el sobrepeso, la obesidad y las enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles relacionadas con la alimentación, se caracterizan por ser padecimientos asociados a una mala nutrición. Un estado de malnutrición puede favorecer la aparición de diversas complicaciones como infecciones por alteración de la inmunidad, dificultad para la cicatrización de heridas, hipoproteinemia, alteraciones en la motilidad intestinal y en la funcionalidad músculo esquelética, en comparación con aquellos que tienen un estado nutricional normal. De los turistas que fueron diagnosticados con gastroenteritis, el 60,41% tuvo malnutrición: de los cuales el 38,54% presento sobrepeso, el 19,79% obesidad y el 2,08 % desnutrición y solo el 39,58% de los pacientes tienen un peso normal, de acuerdo a los puntos de corte de la Organización Mundial de la salud. El 75% de los pacientes con gastroenteritis son turistas internacionales y el 25% turistas nacionales.  En este estudio se concluye que el 60,41% de los pacientes padecían de malnutrición (38,5 % por sobrepeso; 19,7% obesidad y 2% desnutrición), por lo que, este es un factor de riesgo para el desarrollo de enfermedades gastrointestinales, sobre todo en personas que viajan a otras regiones durante actividades turísticas.Universidad Nacional Federico Villarreal.
