Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 90 professionals who work in health facilities of three health networks located in extremely poor districts. The statements were analyzed through thematic analysis and the theoretical framework of the World Health Organization was used. Results: Four categories emerged: The university training of health professionals should be based 1) on health priorities, 2) work with the community and community prevention, 3) management of health services and (4) training interprofessional, social skills and career advancement. Conclusions: Universities that train health professionals must implement these recommendations to favor the attraction and retention of personnel in rural areas and who provide health care to extremely poor populations.Objetivo: Analizar las prioridades en la formación universitaria que promuevan la retención laboral, perspectiva del profesional de salud en Ayacucho. Materiales y métodos: El presente estudio es de enfoque cualitativo, y en cuanto a su diseño metodológico es un estudio descriptivo. La población fue de 656 participantes siendo profesionales de la salud y siendo el tamaño de la muestra de 90 participantes. Se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas a 90 profesionales que laboran en establecimientos de salud de tres redes de salud ubicados en distritos de extrema pobreza. Las declaraciones fueron analizadas mediante el análisis temático y se empleó el marco teórico de la Organización Mundial de la Salud. Resultados: Emergieron cuatro categorías: La formación universitaria de los profesionales de la salud debe estar basada 1) en prioridades sanitarias, 2) el trabajo con la comunidad y la prevención comunitaria, 3) la gestión de servicios de salud y 4) la formación interprofesional, habilidades sociales y promoción profesional. En cuanto al tipo de profesión, 41% (n=37) eran Enfermeras, 36% (n=32) eran Obstetras y 23% (n=21) eran Médicos.
