However, it is also one of the most challenging disorders to address due to the severe impairment it causes in diagnosed individuals’ social and occupational functioning. Therefore, this review presents various theoretical aspects to broaden the understanding and treatment of BPD. It begins by describing the diagnostic criteria for BPD according to the DSM-5, the psychopathological characteristics based on Millon’s personality theory, and the mechanisms of chronicity. Subsequently, it explores the etiological causes, related clinical syndromes, and the use of third-generation therapies as psychological interventions for BPD. Finally, it presents future lines of research and their implications to contribute to a comprehensive conceptualization of BPD.El trastorno de personalidad límite (TPL) es un trastorno mental frecuente, ya que afecta a un gran porcentaje de personas a nivel mundial (0.7 % - 5.9 %). Pero también es de los más difíciles de abordar, debido al grave deterioro que produce en el funcionamiento social y laboral de las personas diagnosticadas. Por ello, el objetivo de esta revisión es presentar en detalle diversos aspectos teóricos para profundizar en la comprensión y el tratamiento del TPL. Se comienza con una descripción de los criterios diagnósticos del TPL según el DSM-5, las características psicopatológicas basadas en la teoría de la personalidad de Millon y los mecanismos de cronicidad. A continuación, se exploran las posibles causas etiológicas, los síndromes clínicos relacionados y el uso de las terapias de tercera generación como intervención psicológica para el TPL.
