Whence decoding preverbal and paraverbal features of another person, as well as reading some of her writings or conversing with her, the interpreter interacts with an agent in three steps. First, the interpreter attributes her own beliefs to the agent; second, formulates new hypotheses to render the agent’s behavior more coherent; and third, expands her own beliefs attributed to the agent as a result of the interaction and sharing of their beliefs. In this paper, it will be shown that some of the assumptions of Modernity are imbedded in our interpretative practices and how we should overcome these assumptions. To this end, a contrast between the model of interpretation and the dialogue model will be drawn. Finally, an argument for the adoption of a extended ethnocentrism over universalism will be presented.Una manera de interpretar la identidad de otra persona es interactuar con ella a través de diversos medios. Al decodificar características preverbales y paraverbales de otra persona, leer algunos de sus escritos o dialogar con ella, se puede señalar que el intérprete interactúa con el agente en tres momentos. Primero, atribuye sus creencias personales al agente; segundo, formula nuevas hipótesis con el propósito de hacer coherente el comportamiento del agente; y tercero, amplía sus propias creencias acerca del agente cuando ambos interactúan y logran compartir creencias. En este artículo se mostrarán algunos presupuestos de la modernidad presentes en nuestras prácticas actuales con el objetivo de superarlos. De este modo, se diferenciará entre el modelo especular frente el modelo del diálogo en la interpretación y luego se señalará la ventaja de postular un etnocentrismo ampliado frente al universalismo.
