Sumario: | Subprosthetic stomatitis is the inflammation of the oral mucosa in contact with the prosthesis and mainly affects older adults, due to the changes that occur in the oral cavity over time. This condition becomes an oral health problem with systemic implications, since diabetes mellitus triggers a wide variety of oral disorders that complicate the oral and general health of patients. Objective. To collect updated information regarding subprosthetic stomatitis in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods. This work is the result of a bibliographic search of articles in English and Spanish, published in the last 5 years. The exploration was carried out in health databases, such as Scopus or PubMed, and was supported by the Google Scholar search engine. In addition, visits were made to relevant websites, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), and the Latin American Diabetes Association (ALAD). Conclusions. There is a greater predisposition to suffer from subprosthetic stomatitis in the female sex. In addition, changes in theoral health of these patients are observed due to the condition of the prosthesis, hygiene habits and the rest given to the appliance by the patients. |
