In this regard, the research carried out raises the question: How does the design of an Environmental Management Program, based on ISO 14001, contribute to the sustainable development of universities located in the region of the Lambayeque? This research is considering the following hypothesis: the implementation of an Environmental Management Program based on ISO 14001 will contribute to sustainable development in the universities in the region of Lambayeque. The kind of research belongs to the prospective one with a qualitative approach to respond to the approach to the problem; it aims to establish a comprehensive perspective on reality and integrate the research in a multidisciplinary way. The preliminary diagnosis and the results obtained states that universities located in Lambayeque do not have an environmental management system and that only one of them applies an Environmental Management Program in an isolated context. The analysis of the Management Program proposed when implemented will benefit the community in general and to the universities in Lambayeque.El objetivo general del presente trabajo es elaborar un Programa de Gestión Ambiental que promueva la sustentabilidad en las Universidades localizadas en la Región Lambayeque para su posterior aplicación. En tal sentido, mediante la investigación realizada se plantea el problema ¿En qué medida el diseño de un Programa de Gestión Ambiental basado en la norma ISO 14001 contribuye al desarrollo sustentable de las Universidades localizadas en la Región Lambayeque? La hipótesis planteada es que la aplicación de un Programa de Gestión Ambiental basado en la Norma ISO 14001 contribuirá al desarrollo sustentable en las Universidades de la Región Lambayeque. El presente trabajo corresponde a una investigación prospectiva con un enfoque de estudio cualitativo para responder a un planteamiento del problema; pretende establecer una perspectiva integral sobre la realidad e integrar en forma multidisciplinaria una investigación. El diagnóstico preliminar cuyos resultados se obtuvieron, señala que las Universidades localizadas en la Región Lambayeque no tienen incorporado un Sistema de Gestión Ambiental y que sólo una de ellas aplica un Programa de Gestión Ambiental aislado del contexto ambiental.
