Arequipa, con una población de medio millón de habitantes, es la segunda ciudad más importante del país. Characato, con una extensión de 657.55 hectáreas y 2,695 habitantes se ubica al sureste de la ciudad y su centro poblado está a 30 kilómetros de ella. Se encuentra a unos 2,400 metros de altura, por lo que su clima es templado durante todo el año. La población de Characato tiene acceso fácil a la ciudad.
