In the midst of this new context, countless companies will emerge, called "companies for mining work"; but there will also be the discovery of one of the most spectacular –and paradoxically less well-known- gold deposits of nineteenth-century Peru. The present work seeks to know the situation of mining in Arequipa during the first republican years and from unpublished material -extracted mainly from local archives- to approach one of the least disclosed gold deposits in regional and national mining history.Los cambios ocurridos en la economía tradicional arequipeña durante la Independencia y la inestabilidad política de nuestros primeros años republicanos llevaron a algunos vecinos y hombres de empresas locales y extranjeros a dirigir sus esperanzas, esfuerzos e inversiones hacia una actividad poco apreciada en Arequipa colonial: la minería. En medio de este nuevo contexto surgirán un sinnúmero de sociedades, denominadas «compañías para el laboreo de minas»; pero también se producirá el descubrimiento de uno de los más espectaculares –y paradójicamente menos conocidos- yacimientos auríferos del Perú decimonónico.
