This calculation also estimated the unequal distribution of resources that resulted from these figures: while in Lima what was then the international ideal was met, one doctor per thousand inhabitants, in the provinces the ratio was one to 8,000 inhabitants.Durante la mayor parte del siglo XX, la medicina occidental y la salud pública peruanas estuvieron concentradas en la costa, en las ciudades y, sobre todo, en Lima. Según una estimación realizada a mediados de los años cuarenta, en el Perú existían aproximadamente 1,450 médicos, de los cuales 800 trabajaban en Lima y el Callao y, en contraste, apenas 650 residían en provincias.
