This study presents an overview of San Miguel city in its historic context.La ciudad de San Miguel constituye la primera fundación española en el Pacífico Sur. Su primer emplazamiento data del año 1532 y fue conocido como San Miguel de Tangarará. De aquí será trasladada enseguida a un segundo asentamiento, en el Alto Piura, donde se convirtió, entre 1534 y 1580, en un núcleo urbano de cierta relevancia, en el que se pudo ensayar una planificación urbana completa en torno a una gran plaza de armas de unos 10 000 metros cuadrados de superficie.
