Since the end of the century, its main activity has been the production of sugar. The owners of the hacienda, the Aspíllaga family, are of Chilean descent; they had a great spirit of enterprise and active political participation at both the regional and national levels.La hacienda Cayalti tiene su origen, como el resto de las haciendas, en el régimen colonial. A mediados del siglo pasado la hallamos dedicada a la producción del algodón bajo los impulsos de una coyuntura externa (guerra de secesión norteamericana) e interna (guano de las islas). Desde fines del siglo su actividad principal es la producción del azúcar.
