However, their higher education systems have shown significant growth over the last few decades. This article compares the evolution of the national higher education systems in research and innovation across all scientific disciplines in both regions. The exercise considers indicators associated with research production, scientific impact, and innovation. The results indicate that, despite their limitations, the Near East countries have increased their scientific output, extended their international collaboration networks, and improved technology transfer from universities to enterprises. In contrast, the scientific and innovation activities of countries in Hispanic South America have stagnated.Sudamérica hispanoparlante y el Oriente Próximo son, dada la magnitud de su producción científico-tecnológica, regiones periféricas en el sistema científico global. No obstante, sus sistemas universitarios se han fortalecido en las últimas décadas. Este artículo compara la evolución de los sistemas universitarios nacionales de la Sudamérica hispanoparlante y el Oriente Próximo en las áreas de investigación e innovación, abarcando las distintas disciplinas del conocimiento científico. Se consideran indicadores de investigación, impacto científico e innovación. Los resultados evidencian que Oriente Próximo, a pesar de sus limitaciones, incrementó la producción científica, la extensión de las redes de colaboración internacional y la transferencia de tecnologías desde la universidad a la industria. De manera opuesta, los países hispanoparlantes de Sudamérica han caído en un estancamiento de su actividad científica y de innovación.A América do Sul Hispânica e Oriente Médio são considerados regiões periféricas no sistema científico global devido à magnitude de sua produção científico-tecnológica. No entanto, seus sistemas universitários foram fortalecidos nas últimas décadas. Este artigo compara a evolução dos sistemas universitários nacionais da América do Sul Hispânica e do Oriente Médio nas áreas de pesquisa e inovação, considerando indicadores de pesquisa, impacto científico e inovação em diferentes disciplinas do conhecimento científico. Os resultados indicam que, apesar de suas limitações, os países do Oriente Médio têm aumentado a produção científica, a ampliação das redes de colaboração internacional e a transferência de tecnologia da universidade para a indústria.
