The cartographies presented show that the expansion of these suburbs was a major problem for the land defense of the city. To contain this problem, numerous provisions were implemented. However, the increase in the suburbs was unstoppable and the circumstance led to new defense and urban projects to safeguard the interests of the population settled outside the wall.Este artículo analiza una serie de planos urbanos, recopilados de fondos archivísticos españoles, de los barrios extramuros de La Habana, con el objetivo de conocer la transformación y crecimiento de este espacio. La cartografía presentada es una muestra de que la expansión de estos arrabales fue un problema de primer orden para la defensa terrestre del recinto de la ciudad. Para contener este problema, se aplicaron numerosas disposiciones.
