Descripción
Sumario:Immediate post-obstetric event contraception (IPOEC) refers to the provision of contraceptive methods during the same care encounter following childbirth, cesarean section, or abortion. This strategy is crucial in public health as it reduces maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality, particularly by preventing unplanned pregnancies in vulnerable contexts. Long-acting reversible contraceptives have proven highly effective, and their provision during hospitalization ensures access for patients who often face barriers to later family planning services. For women with severe maternal morbidity, IPOEC is essential to protect health by avoiding short interpregnancy intervals, which are associated with complications such as preterm birth, low birth weight, and congenital anomalies. IPOEC is also fundamental after abortion, since all hormonal methods and intrauterine devices can be initiated immediately, helping to prevent unsafe abortions. In conclusion, IPOEC not only improves maternal and perinatal outcomes but also safeguards women’s sexual and reproductive rights, making it a sanitary, ethical, and social imperative.
