description In the educational context, academic motivation is an individual characteristic associated with various indicators of academic achievement. However, few studies have explored this variable among students over 60 years of age, creating a gap in the understanding of academic motivation in later life. The purpose of this study was to describe academic motivation from the experiences of older adult women enrolled in higher education. A qualitative and phenomenological study was conducted with the collaboration of six older adult women enrolled in two higher education academic programs, aged 60 to 65 years, using an interview guide to collect information. The content analysis identified five categories that make up academic motivation in older female university students: family support, self-fulfillment, academic support, job expectations, and amotivation. Among the findings, it is noteworthy that academic motivations focus on the support received from children and partners, the achievement of personal and professional goals, and the support of teachers. The findings are expected to inform the development of inclusive educational policies that promote the participation and persistence of older adults in university settings.

Actualmente, son pocos los estudios que han descrito esta variable en estudiantes mayores de 60 años, generando un vacío en la comprensión de la motivación académica en la vejez. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue describir la motivación académica desde la experiencia de mujeres mayores universitarias. Se realizó un estudio cualitativo y fenomenológico en el que colaboraron 6 mujeres adultas mayores inscritas en dos programas académicos de educación superior, con una edad de 60 a 65 años y se empleó una guía de entrevista para la recolección de la información. Resultado del análisis de contenido se identificaron cinco categorías que conforman la motivación académica en mujeres mayores universitarias: apoyo familiar, autorrealización, apoyo académico, expectativas laborales y amotivación. Entre los hallazgos se destaca que las motivaciones académicas se centran en el apoyo recibido de los hijos y la pareja, el cumplimiento de metas personales y laborales y en el apoyo de los docentes. Se espera que las motivaciones identificadas sean consideradas en el diseño de políticas educativas incluyentes que favorezcan la permanencia de la población mayor en el ámbito universitario.Na área da educação, a motivação acadêmica é uma característica individual relacionada a diversos indicadores de desempenho escolar. Atualmente, são poucos os estudos que abordam essa variável em estudantes com mais de 60 anos, o que gera uma lacuna na compreensão da motivação acadêmica na velhice. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi descrever a motivação acadêmica a partir da experiência de mulheres idosas universitárias. Foi realizado um estudo qualitativo e fenomenológico no qual colaboraram seis mulheres idosas inscritas em dois programas académicos de ensino superior, com idades entre 60 e 65 anos, e foi utilizado um guia de entrevista para a recolha de informações. A análise de conteúdo identificou cinco categorias que compõem a motivação acadêmica em universitárias idosas: apoio familiar, autorrealização, apoio acadêmico, expectativas de carreira e desmotivação. Entre os achados, vale destacar que as motivações acadêmicas se concentram no apoio recebido dos filhos e do cônjuge, no cumprimento de metas pessoais e profissionais e no apoio dos professores.
