It is concluded that Metformin is a first-line glucose lowering agent in the treatmen of DM2.Se efectúa primero una revisión de la fisiopatología de la diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM2) y luego del papel que tiene el hipoglicemiante oral Metformina en el tratamiento de esta enfermedad, tomando en consideración su mecanismo de acción, indicaciones, sus ventajas de no producir hipoglicemia ni incremento de peso, las consecuencias de su administración sobre los hijos de madres con diabetes gestacional, las restricciones en pacientes con riesgo a desarrollar una acidosis láctica, sus presentaciones medicamentosas y modo de utilizarla y sus efectos secundarios.
