The research is qualitative and its design is phenomenological, to understand the perceptions of teachers, who constitute the population of analysis, from which an intentional sample of 9 teachers was selected, with 11 to 30 years of permanence in the institution. The axes of analysis are the perception of the faculties it grants and the limits that restrict the freedom of teaching, focusing on the knowledge and behaviors assumed by the teachers in each case. Data were collected using the in-depth interview technique and the in-depth interview guide as an instrument. The results show that the freedom of teaching, in the perception of teachers, is a right and a duty that serves the teacher and the student, considered as the freedom to introduce concepts and themes necessary to contextualize curricular planning and execution, promoting the free work development of the teacher, with respect to the legal framework. The powers it grants are freedom of thought, opinion and action. The limits that restrict it are the norms, political pressure, scientific advance and the opinion of the people.La investigación se orientó a interpretar la percepción que los docentes de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Educación de la Universidad Nacional del Altiplano- Puno, en el año 2015, tienen acerca de la libertad de cátedra, identificando las facultades que otorga y los límites que restringen su ejercicio. La investigación es de tipo cualitativo y su diseño es fenomenológico, para comprender las percepciones de los docentes, quienes constituyen la población de análisis, de la cual se seleccionó una muestra intencional de 9 docentes, con 11 a 30 años de permanencia en la institución. Los ejes de análisis son la percepción de las facultades que otorga y los límites que restringen la libertad de cátedra, centrándose en los conocimientos y los comportamientos que asumen los docentes en cada caso. Los datos fueron recogidos utilizando la técnica de la entrevista en profundidad y la guía de entrevista en profundidad, como instrumento. Los resultados muestran que la libertad de cátedra, en la percepción de los docentes, es un derecho y un deber que sirve al docente y al estudiante, considerada como la libertad de introducir conceptos y temas necesarios para contextualizar la planificación y ejecución curricular, fomentando el libre desenvolvimiento laboral del docente, con respeto al marco legal. Las facultades que otorga son la libertad de pensamiento, de opinión y de actuación.
