En algunos casos, la convivencia social ha transitado por etapas de inconcebible deshumanización, la más grave de todas: el sacrificio de seres humanos, respaldados e incluso promovidos desde el propio pensamiento filosófico. María Zambrano atribuye esta constante a la ausencia, por una parte, de una conciencia histórica y, por otra parte, de una conciencia ética, carencias que han abonado el campo para la manipulación del ser humano y la justificación de hechos verdaderamente deplorables. Para reconducir esta situación, considera que no basta con la divulgación de conocimientos, sino sobre todo, requiere de la generación de convicciones en cada persona.
