Tiene una población de 1’419.947 habitantes con un Producto Interno Bruto para el 2016 en millones de pesos de 13’329.871. De acuerdo con los resultados obtenidos usando herramientas como la Matriz PESTE y la Matriz AMOFHIT, se diseñó un plan estratégico para el departamento con vigencia 2028 en el cual se potencializan las fortalezas y oportunidades y a su vez se neutralizan las amenazas y debilidades externas e internas del departamento. La visión del Tolima busca establecer oportunidades laborales competitivas para sus habitantes de forma que obtengan mayores niveles de productividad que permitan el desarrollo económico y sostenible del departamento; impulsando de igual forma la educación y la salud para el bienestar de sus habitantes. Para alcanzar esta visión se diseñaron durante el plan estratégico catorce estrategias que están alineadas a los seis objetivos de largo plazo que buscará alcanzar el departamento a lo largo de los próximos diez años. El desarrollo de las principales actividades económicas del departamento como lo son el cultivo de arroz, la piscicultura y el ecoturismo; en conjunto con el fortalecimiento del sistema educativo y de salud son el pilar del plan estratégico, que será controlado a través de un tablero de control dinámico que será ajustado de acuerdo con la retroalimentación constante que permita el desarrollo sustentable del Tolima.

It has a total area of 23,562 km² that corresponds to 2.06% of the total area of Colombia. It has a population of 1’419.947 inhabitants with a Gross Domestic Product for 2016 of 13’320.871 pesos. According to the results obtained using tools such as the Matrix PESTE and Matrix AMOFHIT, a strategic plan for the department effective 2028 was designed, in which the strengths and opportunities are potentiate and at the same time, threats and external and internal weaknesses of the department are neutralize. The vision of Tolima seeks to establish competitive jobs opportunities for its inhabitants to obtain higher levels of productivity that allow the economic and sustainable development of the department; promoting education and health in the same way for the welfare of its inhabitants. To achieve this vision were designed during the strategic plan, fourteen strategies that are aligned to the six long-term goals that the Department will seek to achieve over the next ten years.
