Geográficamente, se encuentra entre las coordenadas 6°32’ y 7°0’ de latitud sur, y 77°13’ 77°46’ de longitud oeste y abarca aproximadamente 2366 Km2 (Fig. 1). En los antiguos mapas geológicos de los cuadrángulo de Leymebamba (Sánchez, 1995) y Huayabamba (Sánchez & Jacay, 1997) no se han cartografiado unidades estratigráficas entre el Grupo Ambo (Carbonífero inferior) y el Grupo Mitu (Triásico inferior). El cartografiado a escala 1:25 000, un transepto estructural y 6 columnas estratigráficas parciales evidencia la sección estratigráfica completa del Carbonífero- Pérmico en el borde oeste de la cuenca Huallaga.
