Este documento explora esta diversidad a través de estudios de caso longitudinales de niños pequeños en Perú, recolectados como parte del proyecto Niños del Milenio/Young Lives. Veintiocho niños y niñas de cuatro comunidades contrastantes fueron entrevistados en el 2007 y otra vez en el 2008, para investigar sobre la manera en la que sus vidas, sus perspectivas y sus experiencias cambiaron durante el proceso de transición del hogar o del centro de educación inicial al primer grado. La investigación también incluyó a sus padres y maestros, así como a sus escuelas, hogares y comunidades. Los niños y niñas de la muestra fueron cuidadosamente seleccionados para asegurar que provinieran de una variedad de comunidades en diferentes áreas de Perú, de comunidades tanto urbanas como rurales, con diferentes niveles de pobreza y diversa composición étnica. El impacto de la reciente violencia política en estas comunidades también se tuvo en cuenta.
