The type of research according to the purpose it pursued was basic and according to the design, non-experimental transectional correlational / causal. The study was based on determining the influence of the processes characteristic of the area of mathematics on the academic performance in the subject of mathematics. These processes were dimensioned in four independent variables; Considering the academic performance in the math subject as a dependent variable. The academic achievement in the math subject was obtained by averaging the grades for each of the four semesters. The results obtained from the parametric analysis, through correlation and multiple regression, found that the processes or variables handling algorithms and solving problems in that order had a significant influence on academic performance. Multiple regression analysis confirmed that for each point of increase in the algorithm management test, academic performance increased by 0.636 points and for each point of increase in problem resolution academic performance increased by 0.277 points. Key words: Correlation, regression, characteristic processes. El presente trabajo de investigación se llevó a cabo en la Institución Educativa “Juan Mejía Baca”, Chiclayo. El estudio fue realizado con una muestra de 25 mujeres y 27 varones del tercer grado de secundaria, con una edad que oscilaba de 13 a 16 años. El tipo de investigación de acuerdo al fin que persigue fue básica y de acuerdo al diseño, no experimental transeccional correlacional/causal. El estudio se sustentó en determinar la influencia de los procesos característicos del área de matemática sobre el rendimiento académico en la asignatura de matemática. Estos procesos se dimensionaron en cuatro variables independientes; considerando al rendimiento académico en la asignatura de matemática como variable dependiente. El rendimiento académico en la asignatura de matemática se obtuvo promediando las calificaciones de cada uno de los cuatro bimestres. Los resultados obtenidos del análisis paramétrico, mediante la correlación y regresión múltiple encontraron que los procesos o variables manejo de algoritmos y resolución de problemas en ese orden, influyeron de manera significativa sobre el rendimiento académico. El análisis de regresión múltiple nos confirmó que por cada punto de aumento en la prueba de manejo de algoritmos, el rendimiento académico aumentaba en 0,636 puntos y por cada punto de aumento en la resolución de problemas el rendimiento académico aumentaba en 0,277 puntos.
