Each is derived from prostanoic acid, consisting of a 5- coals (cyclopentane) with 2 hydrocarbon chains attached to neighboring carbon.Las prostaglandinas fueron reconocidas primero por sus efectos sobre la contractibilidad de la fibra muscular uterina y otros músculos lisos. Pero no fueron aislados en forma pura, pese a los grandes esfuerzos desplegados, hasta fines del 50 e inicio de los años 60. Se conoce ahora que comprenden un grupo de ácidos grasos hidroxilados químicamente conectados en una larga cadena.
