ASSESSMENT OF OVARIAN FOLLICLE IN CREOLE MARES FOLLOWING THE ADMINISTRATION OF hCG

The aim of the study was to evaluate the follicular dynamics in creole mares before and after the administration of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). The study was conducted in Lima, Peru, during September and October, 2001, in 10 animals of various ages, reproductively active and with signs of estrus. The follicular diameter of the dominant follicle in both ovaries was measured my ultrasound. The hCG was injected to animals with follicles greater than 35 mm42.5 ± 2.4 mm at estrus, at hCG injection, and time of ovulation respectively, without statistical differences between ovaries. El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar la dinámica folicular en yeguas criollas antes y después de la administración de gonadotropina coriónica humana (hCG). El estudio se realizó en Lima, Perú, entre setiembre y octubre, 2001, con 10 animales de edad diversa, reproductivamente hábiles y con signos de celo. Se determinó el diámetro del folículo dominante en ambos ovarios mediante ultrasonografía, y se aplicó hCG a aquellos animales cuyo diámetro folicular fue mayor de 35 mm. El diámetro folicular fue de 31.4 ± 7.1, 41.1 ± 2.8 y 42.5 ± 2.4 mm al inicio del estro, en el momento de la aplicación de hCG y al momento de la ovulación, respectivamente, sin mostrar diferencias estadísticas entre ovarios. El crecimiento folicular diario fue de 2.1± 0.9 mm, sin encontrar diferencia estadística entre ovarios.
