Religious preaching has served two main functions for centuries: orthodoxy andorthopraxy. It also played an important role in politics, like legitimizing the fledglingModern State in the late centuries of the middle ages. In the case of ourcountry, an interesting example has been the colonial debate referred to the ImmaculateConception which will be discussed in this paper in a different politicalcontext. The sermons which celebrated the victory of the Battle of Ayacucho arevaluable for the occasion, the language and, especially, for the relationship stillmanifest between the civil and religious power.
La prédica religiosa ha cumplido durante siglos con dos funciones fundamentales: ortodoxia y ortopraxis, incluso desempeñó un importante papel en lo político, como ha sido la legitimación del naciente Estado Moderno en los siglos finales de la Edad Media. En el caso de nuestro país, un ejemplo interesante ha sido el debate virreinal referido a la Inmaculada Concepción y que en esta presentación analizaremos en un diferente contexto político. Los sermones que festejaron la victoria de Ayacucho son valiosos por la ocasión, el lenguaje y, especialmente, por la relación que se sigue manifestando entre el poder civil y el poder religioso.
